What To Look For

False alarms are the #1 consumer complaint about radar detectors. On the highway, many are caused by Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM, or lane-change-warning) radar on nearby cars. In town, radar-controlled door openers are usually to blame.

The best models have GPS to lock out door-opener radar. Without GPS, expect frequent false alerts.

High-end models have filters to limit false alarms from BSM radar. On a few, the filters can be updated to meet new threats.

Detectors with GPS also warn of red light and speed cameras.
